Is sports betting legal in Michigan?
Michigan allows sports betting online through mobile apps and in person at Detroit's casinos and tribal casinos. It started in 2020 in person, with mobile apps since January 2021. You have to be at least 21 to bet on sports in Michigan. Betting is overseen by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
How to self-exclude from sports betting in Michigan
You can't count on willpower at 1 a.m. after a bad beat. Self-exclusion means you don't have to, because the sportsbooks are required to say no for you.
In Michigan, the main option is the Michigan Responsible Gaming Database.
- The Responsible Gaming Database lets you exclude yourself from all Michigan-regulated online gaming and internet sports betting. You apply with the board's application form.
- For Detroit's commercial casinos, there's a separate Disassociated Persons List. That one is for life, with removal possible after 5 years by request.
- The Gaming Control Board has a responsible gaming representative who can help with the forms.
While the state program kicks in, close the gap yourself: open each betting app you've used and turn on its self-exclusion or account closure, usually under responsible gaming.
Want help closing each account one by one? Start with the big three sportsbooks, then work through the rest.
Good to know in Michigan
- Michigan's tribal casinos run their own exclusion programs. Ask each casino directly.
The games that hit hardest in Michigan
Home teams carry the most money and the most feeling. In Michigan, that's the Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons, Detroit Tigers, Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans. Treat their games like a trigger, because they are one, and set your plan the day before instead of at kickoff.
Mark Michigan vs. Ohio State ("The Game") and Michigan vs. Michigan State rivalry game on your calendar too. Big events bring big promos, so plan those days a week ahead.

Lock your phone and your bank account
Offshore sites don't care about state lists, so the blocks on your own devices matter as much as the paperwork. Put a blocker on your phone and laptop and hand the passcode to someone you trust. This guide walks through each layer.
Then handle the money side. Pull your cards off every betting site, and if you're carrying debt from betting, talk to a nonprofit counselor through NFCC.org before you try to fix it alone.
