Sports Betting Addiction Test

Nine yes-or-no questions about the past 12 months. Your answers never leave your device.

Maybe you just closed the app after a rough night and typed this into a search bar. That took some honesty. Stick with it for a couple more minutes.

These questions follow the nine signs doctors use to diagnose gambling disorder in the DSM-5, put into plain language. A quiz can't diagnose you. What it can do is give you an honest look in the mirror, and a starting point for a conversation with someone who can help.

1. Have you needed to bet more money, or bet more often, to get the same rush?

2. Do you get restless or irritable when you try to cut back or stop?

3. Have you tried more than once to cut back or stop, and couldn't?

4. Do you think about betting a lot, like replaying old bets, planning the next one or figuring out where the money will come from?

5. Do you often bet when you're stressed, down, anxious or feeling guilty?

6. After a loss, do you often come back to win it back?

7. Have you lied to anyone to hide how much you bet or lost?

8. Has betting put a relationship, job, school or career opportunity at risk, or cost you one?

9. Have you needed someone else to bail you out of money problems your betting caused?

Answer all nine to see your result.

How the sports betting addiction test is scored

Doctors diagnose gambling disorder when someone shows at least 4 of these 9 signs within 12 months. The count sets the severity: 4 to 5 is mild, 6 to 7 is moderate and 8 to 9 is severe. Gamblers Anonymous has its own 20-question test, and says most compulsive gamblers answer yes to at least 7.
